Dr. Paul Tortland, DO is a sports medicine and regenerative medicine physician in Glastonbury, Connecticut, specializing in non-surgical orthopedics and orthobiologics. With more than three decades of experience, he combines sports medicine, musculoskeletal ultrasound, and image-guided regenerative treatments such as High-concentrate PRP, BMAC, MFAT, and prolotherapy to help patients understand their options and consider alternatives to surgery when appropriate.
Dr. Tortland grew up in Stamford, Connecticut and attended the University of Connecticut, where he earned his bachelor's degree. He also earned a master's degree in Marriage and Family Therapy. Before medical school, he worked in private practice as a marriage and family therapist and taught at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point campus — experience that still shapes how he listens to patients today.
He earned his medical degree from the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine (UNECOM) in Biddeford, Maine, where he was also awarded a predoctoral fellowship in Osteopathic Principles and Practice and Human Anatomy.
Dr. Tortland completed his internship at Warren Hospital in Phillipsburg, New Jersey, finished his residency at UNECOM, and completed a Sports Medicine fellowship at SportsCare / Toledo Hospital in Ohio. He is a Fellow of the American Osteopathic Academy of Sports Medicine (FAOASM) and holds board certification in Sports Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. He also holds the Diplomate of the American Board of Regenerative Medicine (DABRM), earned in December 2015.
He begins with the diagnosis—not the procedure—considering the underlying condition, clinical findings, imaging, prior treatment, patient goals, and available evidence before recommending treatment. Patients should understand the potential benefits, limitations, and alternatives, including when another treatment or surgery may be more appropriate.
Dr. Tortland teaches physicians nationally and internationally in sports medicine, regenerative medicine, and musculoskeletal ultrasound as Associate Professor at Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), and has authored peer-reviewed publications and textbook contributions on ultrasound-guided musculoskeletal care. The same diagnosis-first, evidence-based philosophy guides both his clinical practice and his teaching. He speaks and teaches worldwide, including training physicians from countries such as Italy, Portugal, Spain, Australia, and Eygpt.
Dr. Tortland has served as a team physician in collegiate, professional, and international sports, including the University of Hartford’s NCAA Division I athletics program and U.S. Figure Skating. That experience informs his practical, function-focused approach to musculoskeletal care.
"Dr. Tortland is a very talented doctor who listens first and then evaluates. His conservative, regenerative approach has benefited me tremendously."
"Dr. Tortland and his office staff are a breath of fresh air — warm, welcoming, and compassionate. He took my concerns seriously and I felt genuinely heard."

Dr. Tortland is board-certified in Sports Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine. He also holds Diplomate certification in Regenerative Medicine through the American Board of Regenerative Medicine (DABRM), earned in December 2015. The University of New England reported that he was the first physician in the United States to earn this regenerative medicine board certification.
